Gynecomastia (enlarged breasts in men)
DURATION
The patient usually returns home in 3 hours after surgery.
ANESTHESIA
Local anesthesia is performed in combination with sedation.
PAIN
This is not a painful surgery. The patient experiences a sense of numbness and stretch (pulling) similar to an intense muscle strain.
RETURN TO WORK - EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES
The patient can return to work a day after surgery. The patient will be able to take a shower from the next day after surgery.
The patient can start exercising within 1 month after surgery.
RESULTS
Although the results are impressive immediately after surgery, swelling and skin tightening takes about 6- 8 months.
In the vast majority, there is no organic endocrine abnormality. Gynecomastia may be due to excessive localized fat, the swelling of the mammary gland or inmost cases a combination of both.
Types of Surgeries:
• In the case of excessive localized fat, only liposuction is performed with two small incisions of 2mm. in diameter and with special cannulas (in 70% of the cases).
• In combination of excessive localized fat with swelling of mammary gland, liposuction is performed first and then the surgeon makes a small incision around the areola where the excess gland is removed (in 25% of the cases).
• In the swelling of the mammary gland in very thin people, liposuction is performed only in peripapillary incision (in 5% of the cases).
If a breast lift surgery is necessary due to the large sagging or reduction of the areola’s size then periareoral mastopexy is performed (an incision made only around the areola).
Only two small waterproof strips are used on the incisions. The patient wears a special compressive vest for a month. In the gynecomastia surgery, sutures used are all absorbable. There is no significant swelling; the bruises subside in about a week and the sense of numbness in 2-3 weeks.
