Blepharoplasty
DURATION OF SURGERY
The procedure normally takes 1 hour (for upper and lower eyelid). The Patient will need to stay in the Hospital after Blepharoplasty for one or two hours (until the patient has fully recovered from the effects of the sedation).
ANESTHESIA
A blepharoplasty is performed under local anesthesia with sedation.

PAIN
Usually, the patient does not need to take any pain medication but only an antibiotic eye ointment for the incisions. However, there is swelling and bruising that will subside in the first week after surgery.
SUTURES
In the upper (eyelid) blepharoplasty, we use intradermal sutures; in the lower (eyelid) blepharoplasty, the sutures are external. All sutures are absorbable.
RETURN TO WORK - EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES
If the patient wants to go out he/she must wear a pair of sunglasses from the first day after the surgery. The sutures are removed in a week and the patient may go back to work and his/her everyday activities. It is recommended that patients do not wear contact lenses for the first 2-3 weeks after blepharoplasty surgery.
LASTING OF RESULTS
The results of a blepharoplasty are permanent. It rarely needs to be repeated. If you notice your eyelids begin to sag again over time, you may benefit from a brow lift rather than another eyelid surgery.
Blepharoplasty is performed to remove the excess skin and fat that usually cause sagging eyebrows, droopy upper lids and the so-called “bags” mainly in the lower eyelid. This procedure cannot correct the wrinkles around the eye: the so-called “crow’s feet”.
During the Upper (Eyelid) Blepharoplasty procedure, the excess skin is removed from the upper eyelid as well as the excess fat that is usually present in the area towards the nose.
Lower (Eyelid) Blepharoplasty Surgery: in this procedure, we remove the excess fat that creates the “bags” as well as the excess skin from the lower eyelids.
For the upper (eyelid) blepharoplasty, the incision must be made precisely in the natural creases of the upper eyelids, about 1cm above the eyelashes. For the lower (eyelid) blepharoplasty, the incision must be made exactly underneath the eyelashes. In some cases, where it is not necessary to remove the skin on the lower eyelid, the incision is made internally in the conjunctiva.
Blepharoplasty is not used for treating the dark circles under eyes. However, there can be a slight improvement when the “bags” on the lower eyelid are removed.
The results of blepharoplasty change over time, but they are inconspicuous. In the upper eyelid, the scar is hidden inside the crease of the eyelid and in the lower eyelid the scar is hidden underneath the eyelashes.
