OTOPLASTY (Ear Surgery)
IDEAL AGE
The most appropriate age for a child is usually at the age of 6, before he/she starts going to school and begins to be teased by the other children (in order to avoid a possible psychological trauma).
ANESTHESIA
Otoplasty surgery, in adults, is performed under local anesthesia with sedation but in young children is performed under general anesthesia as they can’t cooperate with the surgeon.
PAIN
The procedure is not painful. There is some sensitivity in the first 24 hours after surgery which is being treated with pain medications that are administered orally. Also, there is a little swelling and a sense of numbness in the first few days (after surgery) that are subsided gradually in several weeks.
INCISIONS
The incisions are made behind the ear and they are inconspicuous.
RETURN TO WORK - EVERYDAY ACTIVITIES
After a few days, adults are able to return to work; children can go back to school in a week. Sports must be avoided for 3-4 months following surgery.
DURATION OF STAY
When the patient has fully recovered from the effects of the sedation, in about two hours, he/she may go home.
In Otoplasty Surgery with specific tools, we soften the cartilage (without removing any tissue) and then we give to the ear the desired shape with the use of non-absorbable sutures.
The skin’s incisions are closed with absorbable sutures.
The patient wears an elastic bandage during the first day after surgery and then only during his/her sleep for one month
